If you’re Becky Burke, you can never have too many guards on your roster. Burke ran a guard heavy rotation at Buffalo, and appears that she will be doing the same thing in Tucson. On Friday, Arizona landed a commitment from former UC San Diego guard Sumayah Sugapong. Talia Goodman of On3.com was the first to report the news.
The 5-foot-7 guard and native of San Diego, California spent the first two seasons of her collegiate career playing for Heidi VanDerveer, sister of legendary former Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer. As a sophomore, Sugapong averaged 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.5 steals in 33.1 minutes per game. In the November non-conference matchup with Arizona, she finished with five points, two rebounds, and a steal in 23 minutes. Her efforts this season earned All-Big West First Team and Big West Championship Most Outstanding Player honors.
Sugapong averaged 14.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.9 steals during her two year career with the Tritons. She was named Big West Freshman of the Year in 2024 and also earned All-Big West Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Team honors. Prior to her time at UC San Diego, Sugapong prepped at La Jolla Country Day High School with former Arizona Wildcats Jada Williams and Breya Cunningham.
With the commitment from Sumayah Sugapong, Becky Burke and Arizona have added eight new players to the roster. She is the fifth new guard on the roster, joining Lani Cornfield (Buffalo), Mickayla Perdue (Cleveland State), Tanyuel Welch (Memphis), Kamryn Kitchen (Virginia). Other players include forward Freddie Wallace (Kansas), Nora Francois (New Orleans), and Achol Magot (Texas Tech).
