A win over a top 15 team on the road would have been massive towards vaulting Brent Brennan’s squad into AP Poll. Instead, the group returns to Tucson with a .500 record two games into the season. But despite the sixth straight loss for the Arizona against BYU, the Wildcats are clinging to a handful of points in the latest Week 2 AP Top 25 Poll.
Arizona received five points in the “Others Receiving Votes” category, effectively ranking it 37th in the nation. Last week, the Wildcats received 33 points, ranking them four spots outside the top 25.
With the win over Arizona, BYU climbs four spots to No. 11. For the second straight week, four Big 12 teams land on the AP Poll: No. 11 BYU, No. 13 Texas Tech, No. 17 Utah, and No. 22 Houston. Oklahoma State received 36 points following its upset win over then-No. 6 Oregon, while Kansas State finished with a point.
The USA Today Coaches Poll was less favorable towards Arizona following the loss. The Wildcats have just one point, while BYU moved up two spots to No. 13.
Arizona will need some help from others – as well as strong performances against Northern Illinois and at Washington State – over the next two weeks if it wants to be in the top 25 when it returns to Big 12 play on October 3 against Cincinnati.
