While Brent Brennan and Co. are looking to snap a two-game skid against Colorado on Saturday, he and the recruiting department are also hard at work securing some secondary help for not next season, but two out. On Wednesday, the Arizona Wildcats landed a commitment from Texas safety Jalani Culpepper, the first recruit in the class of 2027.
The 5-foot-9, 170-pound defensive back is from Georgetown, Texas, located roughly 30 miles north of Austin, and currently plays his high school ball at East View High School. Per MaxPreps, Culpepper appeared in seven games during his sophomore season in 2024-25, registering 31 total tackles, an interception, and four pass deflections. Through six games as a junior in the 2025-26 season, he has tallied 31 more tackles, another interception, and two pass deflections. He also had three kickoff returns and a punt return this season and also carried the ball twice for the Patriots this season.
Culpepper is not yet rated by 247Sports, but holds a three-star rating from Rivals/On3. He held offers from an impressive list of 17 programs, including Colorado, Florida State, Houston, Indiana, SMU, Texas Tech, and more. Culpepper took an unofficial visit to Tucson for Arizona’s season opener against Hawaii on August 30, before ultimately committing to the Chip Viney and Danny Gonzales.
While Jalani Culpepper is the Arizona Wildcats’ first commitment in the class of 2027, he shows that the staff is continuing to prioritize Texas as a recruiting hotbed, especially since the program’s move to the Big 12 in 2024. Arizona has nine players from Texas in its 2025 freshman class, with another five expected to join the Wildcats from the Lone Star state in 2026.
