One of Arizona’s most exciting young guards made sure to close out 2024 with a bang, and ring in the New Year with some fireworks. Freshman guard Lauryn Swann earned her first career start this week, and took home her second Big 12 Freshman of the Week award.
The freshman from Queens, New York was the Wildcats’ lone bright spot on New Year’s Eve in Arizona’s home loss to Utah. Swann led the team with a career high 22 points on 8-11 shooting against the Utes. She also knocked down a career-best six of seven 3-point attempts. Tuesday’s performance was the first 20-point game in Swann’s career.
She followed it up with a more well-rounded performance in Arizona’s road win over UCF on Saturday. Against the Golden Knights, Swann scored six points, along with three rebounds, two assists, and a career-best three steals. On the whole, Swann finished last week averaging 14 points per game, while a shooting on a combined 10-17 (58.8%) from the field, and 8-12 (66.7%) from beyond the arc.
This is the second Big 12 Freshman of the Week award for Lauryn Swann. She won her first award back on November 18 after Arizona defeated UNLV and Chicago State. She is still the only Wildcat to receive a weekly honor from the league this season. Swann is also one of just two freshman to earn weekly honors more than once, joining BYU’s Delaney Gibb.
