You know what they say, a portal pickup a day keeps the doctor away – or at least something like that. In Becky Burke’s first week in Tucson, the Wildcats’ new head coach has strung together some impressive transfers, and Wednesday was no exception. Former Memphis Tigers’ guard Tanyuel Welch committed to Arizona, Talia Goodman of On3.com announced via social media.

The 5-foot-10 sophomore guard spent the last three seasons in Memphis, but has played just two. As a redshirt sophomore, she appeared in all 30 games, starting in 25 of them. She averaged 10.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, while shooting 39.8 percent from the field and 45.3 percent from 3-point range.

She missed the 2023-24 season with an injury, but appeared in 34 games as a true freshman in 2022, averaging 3.7 points in 12.6 minutes per game for the Tigers.

Tanyuel Welch is the third guard from the transfer portal that has committed to Arizona since Becky Burke’s arrival, joining Lani Cornfield from Buffalo and reigning Horizon League Player of the Year Mickayla Perdue from Cleveland State. Montaya Dew also remains on the roster after suffering a meniscus injury late in the season.

The average height of Becky Burke’s three portal pickups is 5-foot-8 – while the speed and quickness is more aligned with the rosters she constructed at Buffalo, Burke will need to shift her focus to post players who can compete with the size and strength of teams like TCU in the Big 12.
